The Top 5 Foods That Pair Best With College Basketball

By Madison White on January 30, 2017

For many, the great American sport might be football or baseball, but to me, the great American sport is most definitely college basketball. It doesn’t get much better than the thrill of a close game or the anxiety of Selection Sunday. The dunks, the three’s, the pure heart in every player. It’s what I, and every other college basketball fan, live for.

So then, if college basketball is the great American sport (to me) what is the great American snack?

When you’re in the heat of watching a game at home, you may realize halfway through that you’re starving. What can you order that’s both stomach and game friendly? You don’t want to risk missing important parts of the game, so it has to be delivery. Lucky for you, I’ve found out the best deliverable foods to eat while watching college basketball.

5. Sandwiches

Nothing gets more classically simple than a sandwich. Plenty of sandwich places offer deals on platters as well, so if you’re hosting a watch party, you can get a little something for everybody. They’re simple. They’re customizable. Everybody likes them. Plus, if you get a little too wrapped up in some close calls and forget to eat right away, sandwiches aren’t something you need to eat warm. You can eat them whenever! This makes them a great candidate for college basketball eating.

4. Egg rolls

You might not think of egg rolls as a classic “American” dish, but they sure are delicious. Because Chinese food is such a staple when it comes to delivery, it’s hard to leave them off the list. However, you want to steer clear of some Chinese foods like noodles and rice that can create a mess very easily. You don’t want something difficult to eat while you’re focusing on the game.

It’s best to stick to some finger foods like egg rolls and crab rangoons that people can eat without too much effort. Also, you may end up with an applicable fortune cookie. “Good tides are ahead,” is definitely a fortune you’ll want to get during the big game.

3. Chips and dip

Many people overlook the fact that there are Mexican places that deliver as well. Much like the Chinese food, though, you’re going to want to keep clear from especially messy foods like burritos and tacos when trying to watch the game. To combat this, try ordering some chips with multiple dips: salsa, queso, and guacamole. Nothing is better than fresh from the restaurant chips and many dips to choose from. This way, you’re not stuck with just one option and neither are your guests. They’re absolutely perfect to snack on during time-outs and commercial breaks.

2. Chicken wings

Chicken wings are a tricky food when it comes to college basketball. Firstly, they can get a little messy. It’s hard to eat some great chicken wings properly without getting sauce all over your fingers. However, chicken wings are so darn delicious that they’re hard not to include on this list. One of the many benefits of chicken wings during games is that it allows you to eat something substantial while also being something snackable.

Secondly, chicken wings are customizable as well. You can go for wings with sweet sauces, savory sauces, and even spicy sauces if you’re looking for that extra kick. The variety is what really makes them a great choice for games, especially when lots of people are around.

1. Pizza

The obvious number one just has to be pizza. When you think about delivery foods, it’s just assumed that the food will be a pizza. This has a good reason behind it though, as pizzas are great for sharing. It’s tough to beat the sheer deliciousness of a fresh, hot pizza delivered right to your door.

When it comes to celebrating and getting together, pizza is the dish that is always there. Nowadays, pizzas can be topped with almost anything: meats, vegetables, even fruits! They can truly be whatever you want. We make good memories and watch great games over pizza. And if your game just happens to not go so well, pizza will be there to comfort you afterward.

Making the choice about what team to cheer for during a college basketball game is a no-brainer, but deciding what to eat might be. When it comes to deliverable foods to eat, you probably have more options than you think. The most obvious choice may be a pizza, but if that doesn’t satisfy your cravings, you can always open yourself up to new places. There is likely a large variety of delivery food places around your town. And if there isn’t, get creative! There might even be some stuff in your pantry that would make a great game-time snack.
